The group is comprised of members from departments across the School of Arts and Sciences. Our purpose is to foster discussion and interaction among students and scholars of all aspects of the Middle Ages and to provide mutual support for the development of a broad interdisciplinary understanding of medieval culture.Medievalists @ Pennhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15037264934465495398noreply@blogger.comBlogger36125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-737547676891814627.post-68239672866388559202019-07-31T09:38:00.000-04:002019-07-31T09:41:05.682-04:00CFP: M@P Session on Mediocrity, Kalamazoo 2020

Middle Grounds: The Politics and Aesthetics of Medieval Mediocrity

What can we learn from unexceptional texts and artifacts in the Middle Ages? How can we critically assess the metrics by which we evaluate quality? How can medieval studies reconcile, or recover from, the history of Orientalism in its estimation of non-European medieval traditions? This panel builds on conversations during the 2019 Medievalists @ Penn Conference on Mediocrity (middling-ages.tumblr.com), which we seek to carry in more explicitly transcultural directions. By revisiting definitions of “middleness,” we hope to foster a rigorous approach to challenging the literary and artistic canons of the Western Middle Ages, to explore organic connections between politics and art within and across European and non-European traditions, and to consider how developing an aesthetics of mediocrity invites new discussions about the ethics of criticism.

We invite 15- to 20-minute papers on this subject from any discipline, and particularly encourage comparative methodologies, as well as research that challenges regional divisions by using global/universal/planetary models of medieval studies. We believe that mediocrity is a useful framework for thinking cross-culturally as well as analyzing the limitations of global approaches, allowing us to explore different aesthetic models and to expose the processes of canon formation within academic institutions. Topics may include, but are not limited to:

Unexceptional examples of common genres, such as romance

Translation, adaptation, and/or reproduction of medieval objects

Mediality of the Middle Ages

Orientalism and the mediality of Middle East/East/non-European traditions

Non-deluxe manuscripts, mundane objects, ordinary subjects

Artists and writers outside conventional canons

Medieval theories of artistic quality

Quotidian devotional practices; the religious lives of the unsaintly

Contemporary and historical reception and criticism

Differences in quality between text and image, or text and music

Our keynote speaker will be Sonja Drimmer (Assistant Professor of Medieval Art and Architecture, UMass Amherst).

What makes something “mediocre” in the Middle Ages? We often assume that if a manuscript, literary text, or work of visual or performance art has survived from the medieval period, it is exceptional in some way. Modern scholarship tends to enforce this assumption by either praising a work for its beauty and importance, or arguing for the centrality and exceptionality of something that past scholarship has ignored. But what of things that have survived that are just OK? How can clarifying the boundaries of what modern or medieval critics consider(ed) “good” and “bad” art still leave room for mediocrity? What can this middle ground teach us about form, aesthetics, language, and reception? Resisting the notion that any texts surviving from the Middle Ages are likely exceptional in some way, this conference seeks to examine unexceptional artistic productions in the Middle Ages, to consider what we can learn from medial texts and artifacts, and to critically assess the metrics by which we evaluate quality. We hope that this topic will challenge the spectrum endpoints of what has been labelled “good” or “bad” by searching for the middle ground.

Sarah writes: Christine de Pizan's Epistre Othea (Letter of Othea) is a mirror for princes/ chivalric manual/ guide to spiritual development written around 1399. It takes the form of a letter from Othea, the goddess of Prudence, to a young prince Hector of Troy. It has a three-part structure - a poetic 'texte' and a prose 'glose' and 'allegorie.' In some versions it is accompanied by an elaborate series of illustrations. It was translated into Middle English by Stephen Scrope in 1440.

What are the methods by which the Middle Ages constructed and maintained states of vulnerability? If we think of vulnerability as entailing threat, what are the methods by which people or things are constructed as threats? What did it mean for medieval people to be living under threat?

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman";">For
Huizinga, the fifteenth century was a filial disappointment. The profound
advances made in the mature High Middle Ages were but a distant memory and it
was part of an epoch marked by ‘childish’ and immature beliefs. Whether or not
we accept this characterization, the fifteenth century seems peculiarly marked
by questions about childhood, youth, immaturity and filiation. The English
poets that succeeded Chaucer, such as Thomas Hoccleve, John Lydgate and Stephen
Scrope, expressed anxieties about their literary pedigree, comparing themselves
to ‘father’ Chaucer and finding their own abilities lacking. This session
invites papers which explore textual relationships through the lens of the
unhappy family. How does filial awareness and resentment shape and motivate
authorship? What modes of filiation do we find poets using? In what ways do
English writers of the fifteenth century both avoid and emulate Chaucer? In an
age when childhood became a political problem through the minority of Henry VI,
how do poets craft and explore maturity?

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman";">In
addition to exploring the relationship between fifteenth-century English
writers and ‘father’ Chaucer, submissions to this session might examine the
insular inheritance of continental French literature. While Sheila Delany
famously excluded Christine de Pizan from a list of “mothers to think back through,”
Thomas Hoccleve, Stephen Scrope and Anthony Woodville all translated
Christine’s French texts into Middle English during the fifteenth century.
Similarly, John Lydgate worked from French ‘parent’ texts, translating
Guillaume de Deguileville’s pilgrimage trilogy and using a version of the
French Roman de Thèbes to compose The Siege of Thebes. Are these
translations a practice of simple adaptation of material already in heavy
circulation among Francophone aristocratic lay readers or do these acts of cultural
appropriation take on a new meaning at the end of the Hundred Years’ War? And
might these French source texts allow fifteenth-century English poets to
re-think their relationship to Chaucer and shape a new vision of English
literary history?<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">

The gears are turning and Fall 2012 is just about to start here at Penn. We're polishing up the details for some great M@P events this semester, and to kick things off we would like to announce the first meeting of the DVMA (Delaware Valley Medieval Association), to be held at the Philadelphia Museum of Art on Saturday, September 15. This meeting is a celebration of the DVMA's 30th anniversary, and promises to be just the beginning of a wonderful year of events! For more information, please visit their lovely website.
Hello medieval blogosphere! As the Penn community settles down for a fruitful summer of academic goodness, the two new M@P co-chairs are gearing up for another amazing year. Keep an eye out for professional development seminars, hands-on research and technology workshops, and more fantastic monthly reading groups (not to mention M@P's fifth annual conference in Spring 2013!).

In the meantime, happy Feast of St. Lutgardis!
Medievally yours,
Fourth Annual Graduate Student Conference

Textual Intercourse: Medieval Appropriations and Appropriation of the Medieval

March 17th-18th, 2012

University of Pennsylvania

Keynote speaker: Prof. Kevin Brownlee

Medieval appropriation of ideas served as a method of transcultural and transhistorical interaction, which led to a burgeoning production of new texts. Whether through an explicit translatio studii maneuver or through unapologetic borrowing, medieval cultural producers positioned themselves in relation to other writers, thinkers, artists, and musicians, etc. This year’s theme of intercourse asks us to probe and complicate the questions of influence, communication, translation, and adaptation across time, space, media, and culture, and it will serve as an entry point into this complex matrix of texts and ideas, broadly defined.

Our conference invites submissions concerning one or more formulations of the idea of intercourse and appropriation. We also welcome paper proposals on the concept of medievalism as a post-medieval appropriation of the cultural products of the Middle Ages. As per our group's mission, we welcome a plurality of perspectives from across all fields of study in recognition of the profound interdisciplinarity of our common object of inquiry: the Middle Ages.
